This charming village on the northern bank of an alpine lake is where medieval France and the French Alps collide. See the tight maze of cobblestone alleys in Annecy, explore the centuries-old castles there, and climb and ski through the breathtaking hilly terrain. The narrow, pedestrian-only alleyways in Annecy's Old Town are punctuated by canals and lined with shops and outdoor dining establishments. Visit the renowned food market on a Friday, Sunday, or Tuesday morning.

Go to the Château d'Annecy, one of the town's most iconic structures. The counts of Geneva previously resided in this enormous fortress, which was built in the 12th century. For sweeping views of the town and the lake, climb one of the towers.

Find the Palais de L'Ile after exploring the chambers that feature artwork, sculptures, and historical objects. On an island in one of the town's canals sits this medieval palace. Visit the Château de Menthon for additional breathtaking examples of medieval architecture. The forested, rocky spur-shaped castle from the 12th century is located on the east shore of Lake Annecy.

Spend part of your vacation days at the lake. The sizable body of freshwater, which boasts being the cleanest in all of Europe, is the site of numerous events. Have fun diving, sailing, and swimming. Small beaches, such as Plage de Annecy, can be found on the eastern shore, although boat docks dominate the waterfront near the old town. Take a bike that you can rent and ride along the trail that follows some of the lakes.

For a variety of outdoor activities, head into the French Alps that surround the lake. Ride a horse through pathways that wind through forests in the warmer months. In the winter, the area is suitable for skiing and snowshoeing. Visit the Gorges du Fier, a little canyon 6 miles west of Annecy, on a guided trip.

Fly into Geneva's international airport, which is 40 minute drive from Annecy. When you view the canals, mountains, and castles, it is clear why Annecy is a well-liked vacation destination.
